How to Mass Unfollow on Instagram Without Getting Blocked
October 31, 2026 · 2 min read
Maybe you followed hundreds of accounts during a follow-for-follow phase, or your feed is full of pages you no longer care about. Either way, you want a cleaner following list without Instagram restricting your account. Here’s a plan that works.
Step 1: Decide who should go
Don’t start by unfollowing. Start with a list. The usual candidates are:
- Accounts that don’t follow you back, if follow-backs matter to you.
- Inactive accounts that haven’t posted in a long time.
- Accounts you followed for a contest, a trend or a follow-for-follow deal.
And the accounts to keep: close friends, family, creators you enjoy, and brands you actually follow for their content.
A tool like Unfollower Tracker gives you the Don’t follow back list in one scan, with filters for verified, private and no-profile-picture accounts. Put everyone you want to keep on the whitelist first, so they can’t be selected by accident.
Step 2: Check your account’s recent history
If you were action blocked in the last few days, wait. Accounts that were restricted recently have less room before the next block. Also be gentler if your account is new.
Step 3: Set a slow pace
There are no official numbers, so err on the side of caution:
- A few seconds between unfollows, with random variation, not a fixed rhythm.
- A longer break of several minutes after every handful of unfollows.
- A daily limit. For large lists, plan the cleanup over several days.
Doing this by hand is tedious, which is why people reach for tools. Just make sure the tool you use paces itself the same way.
Step 4: Unfollow in batches
With Unfollower Tracker, select the accounts in the Don’t follow back tab and click Unfollow. Before it starts, the extension shows how many accounts you picked and roughly how long the batch will take at your current pace. Then it works through the list:
- A randomized delay between each account.
- A cooldown every few accounts.
- A live countdown to the next action, and a Stop button at all times.
Keep the instagram.com tab open while it runs, because Chrome slows down background tabs.
Step 5: Stop at the first warning
If Instagram returns an error, a rate limit or an “Action blocked” message, stop. Unfollower Tracker does this automatically and shows when you can resume. Retrying early tends to make blocks last longer.
Step 6: Rescan and continue tomorrow
After a batch, run a new scan so your lists are current, then continue the next day. A cleanup of 500 accounts spread over a week is far safer than one done in an afternoon.
Things to avoid
- Password-based services. Tools that log in to your account from their servers are both a security risk and much more likely to trigger Instagram’s defences.
- “Unfollow everyone” in one click. If a tool promises to wipe your list in minutes, that speed is the problem.
- Unfollowing and immediately following new accounts. Lots of follow and unfollow activity together looks like spam.
