Whitelisting: How to Protect Accounts You Never Want to Unfollow

October 31, 2026 · 3 min read

A whitelist is a list of accounts that a cleanup tool will never unfollow, no matter what filters or “select all” you use. It’s the simplest way to make sure a bulk unfollow removes the accounts you meant to remove, and nobody else. Instagram doesn’t have a whitelist of its own; it’s a feature of unfollow tools, and it’s worth setting up before you touch anything.

Why you need one

Most unfollow mistakes aren’t caused by bad intentions. They happen because lists are long and selection is quick:

  • You filter for accounts that don’t follow you back, hit select all, and your favourite artist is in there.
  • Your sister’s account is private and doesn’t follow you back, so it looks just like a stranger’s.
  • A friend changed their username and you don’t recognise it.

Without protection, any of these can be unfollowed in a batch. Instagram won’t tell them, but they might notice, and re-following doesn’t always undo the awkwardness. Our guide to whether Instagram tells people when you unfollow explains how people find out.

Who belongs on your whitelist

Think of it as “accounts I’d be upset to lose”. Typical entries:

  • Close friends and family, whether or not they follow you back.
  • Partners, coworkers and clients, where an unfollow could be misread.
  • Creators you genuinely enjoy, especially big ones who would never follow you back.
  • Brands, shops and services you use, like your gym, a local café or a favourite store.
  • Accounts you’d struggle to find again, like a small artist you found once through a share.

A good rule: if you’d hesitate before unfollowing them by hand, whitelist them.

Who doesn’t need to be on it

Keep the whitelist meaningful. You don’t need to add people who follow you back, if your cleanup only targets non-followers, because they won’t be in that list anyway. And there’s no point whitelisting accounts you’re unsure about; decide on those first, then add or skip them.

How to build it quickly

Building a whitelist is easiest from the same list you’re about to clean up. In Unfollower Tracker, whitelisting is part of Pro:

  1. Run Scan now so your lists are complete.
  2. Open the Don’t follow back tab. This is the list most cleanups work from.
  3. Use search to find friends and family by name, and add them to the whitelist.
  4. Use the verified filter to spot creators and brands, and whitelist the ones you want.
  5. Scroll the rest once, slowly, and add anyone you recognise.

Whitelisted accounts move to the Whitelist tab and are left out of any selection you make afterwards, including select all.

Tip: do your whitelist in one sitting before your first bulk unfollow, not as you go. It’s much easier to spot friends when you’re only looking for friends.

Keeping it current

A whitelist isn’t a one-time job. Revisit it every so often:

  • Add new friends as you follow them, especially if they don’t follow back.
  • Remove people you no longer want to protect, so they can be part of a future cleanup again.
  • Check after big life changes, like a new job or a move, when the people who matter shift.

Whitelisting vs. muting

A whitelist stops you unfollowing someone. It doesn’t change what you see. If there’s someone you want to keep following but don’t want in your feed, whitelist them and mute them on Instagram too. See unfollow, mute or restrict for when each one fits.

Using it in a cleanup

With your whitelist in place, the rest of a cleanup gets simpler. You can filter, select all and unfollow in batches without second-guessing every name. Unfollower Tracker still paces each batch with randomized delays and cooldowns, and stops if Instagram returns a rate limit or block. For the full process, read how to clean up your following list.

The short version

  • A whitelist protects accounts from ever being unfollowed by a tool.
  • Add friends, family, favourite creators and anyone you’d hesitate over.
  • Build it before your first bulk unfollow, and revisit it now and then.
